HumVision Cannot Find My Recording
Steps to try when a recording will not open.
Use this when
You open HumVision and select a folder, but the app shows an error like "No sonar channel files (.SON) found in the selected directory", or the recording simply fails to load.
Common reasons
- Wrong folder selected — Humminbird writes each recording into its own numbered subfolder (your recording folder usually starts with
Rfollowed by a number, such asR00008). Selecting the parent folder instead of the individual recording folder will find no files. - Missing .SON files — At least one
.SONfile must be present. If the SD card was removed during recording, some channel files may be absent or truncated. - Corrupted or zero-byte files — A failed card write can leave a
.SONfile that appears present but is unreadable. - Files renamed or moved — HumVision looks for files with the exact names the unit wrote (
B000.SON,B001.SON, etc.). Renaming or reorganising the folder breaks discovery. - File system not yet mounted — On macOS, an SD card or external drive may take a few seconds to mount fully after plugging in.
How to check
- Open Finder and navigate to the folder you selected. Confirm it contains files named
B000.SON(and optionallyB000.IDX,Recording.DAT, etc.) directly inside, not one level up. - Check file sizes. A valid
.SONfile is typically several megabytes. A file showing 0 bytes means the write was incomplete. - If the files are inside a subfolder, note the subfolder name and select that folder instead when opening in HumVision.
What to try next
- Click Open Recording and select the specific numbered subfolder (the folder with a name like
R00008), not the parent folder. - Copy the recording folder from the SD card to your local drive before opening. Some card readers present the file system as read-only or throttle reads in a way that triggers timeouts.
- If the card was removed mid-recording, try a different recording from the same card to confirm whether the card or that specific recording is the problem.
- Re-format the SD card in the Humminbird unit (not in a computer) and record a new test file to rule out a card error.
If it still does not work
If you can see the .SON files in Finder but HumVision still refuses to open them, contact support at support@gethumvision.com and include the recording folder name, file sizes, and any error text shown in the app.
