Save a Measurement as a Contact

Convert a measurement into a contact for the case record.

Use this when

You have already drawn a measurement with the Ruler, Shadow Height, or Target Box tool and want to attach that reading to a named contact in the case record.

Before you start

Draw a measurement first. The Add Contact button appears in the measurement callout on the canvas immediately after the measurement completes. If you navigate away or dismiss the callout, you will need to redraw the measurement.

Save a ruler or shadow-height measurement as a contact

  1. Draw a measurement with the Ruler tool (R) or the Shadow Height tool (H). A callout appears on the canvas showing the result.
  2. Click Add Contact below the measurement readout.
  3. The Contact dialog opens. The measured value is pre-filled in the Length field (Ruler) or the Height field (Shadow Height).
  4. Edit the Label, Classification, and Confidence fields.
  5. Click Save.

Save a target-box measurement as a contact

  1. Draw a target box with the Target Box tool (B). A callout appears showing L: [length] x W: [width].
  2. Click Add Contact in the callout.
  3. The Contact dialog opens with both the Length and Width fields filled in.
  4. Edit the Label, Classification, and Confidence fields as needed.
  5. Click Save.

What you should see

After saving, the new contact appears in the Contacts list panel with a pin on the canvas at the position where the measurement was taken. The Contact dialog shows the pre-filled size values alongside read-only fields for Latitude, Longitude, Depth, and Ping number.

If it does not work

  • Add Contact button is not visible — the callout was dismissed. Redraw the measurement; the button only appears immediately after drawing.
  • Size fields are blank after Add Contact — the measurement did not produce a valid result. Check that you placed both endpoints (Ruler and Shadow Height require two clicks; Target Box requires a drag of visible size).
  • Contact does not appear on the canvas — make sure Show Contacts is turned on in the display controls.
