Classify a Contact

Set the classification and category for a contact.

Use this when

You want to record what type of object a contact represents. Classification and confidence help you sort and filter contacts during review and make handoff notes clear.

Before you start

The contact must already exist. Either create a new one with the Contact Pin tool, or open an existing contact from the contacts list in the sidebar.

Set the classification

  1. Open the Contact dialog by clicking an existing pin on the sonar, or by placing a new Contact Pin.
  2. Click the Classification dropdown.
  3. Select one of the following options:
  • Anomaly — unidentified return, no category yet
  • Wreck — vessel or aircraft wreckage
  • Vehicle — submerged vehicle other than a vessel
  • Body / Human — human remains
  • Debris — loose material, scattered objects
  • Structure — fixed built structure
  • Natural feature — geological or biological feature
  1. Click Save.

Set the confidence

  1. In the same Contact dialog, click the Confidence dropdown.
  2. Select Low, Medium, or High based on how certain you are of the classification.
  3. Click Save.

You can change both fields at any time by clicking the pin on the sonar and reopening the dialog.

What you should see

The contact entry in the sidebar updates to show the selected classification label. Confidence is stored with the contact and appears in any export.

If it does not work

  • Classification dropdown is missing — the Contact dialog may not have loaded correctly. Close and reopen it by clicking the pin again.
  • Changes do not persist after closing — make sure you clicked Save and not Cancel or the close icon.
