Generate a Side-Scan Mosaic
Run a mosaic from a side-scan recording.
Use this when
You have a recording with Side Imaging data and want to build a top-down map of the bottom.
Before you start
- The recording must have Side Imaging port and starboard channels. If those channels are missing, the Mosaic tab shows a "Side-scan mosaic needs SI channels" message and the Generate Mosaic button is disabled.
- A Pro or higher plan is required to access the Mosaic tab.
Generate a mosaic
- Open a recording in the viewer.
- Click the Mosaic tab at the top of the viewer to switch to the Mosaic view. A GPS track appears on the map as soon as the recording loads.
- Pick a resolution using the 0.5 m, 0.25 m, or 0.1 m buttons in the bottom control bar. The default is 0.25 m (standard). See Pick draft, standard, or high quality for guidance.
- Click Generate Mosaic.
- A progress overlay appears showing "Generating mosaic" with a progress bar and a phase label. Wait for it to finish.
- When generation completes, the mosaic image appears on the map, georeferenced to the GPS track.
What you should see
The map fills with a grayscale image of the bottom draped over the satellite or street map tiles. The status bar at the bottom shows the grid size, the actual meters-per-pixel used, how many pings contributed, and how long generation took.
If the recording had any quality issues, a yellow warning banner appears above the map. Read the message — it describes which pings were skipped and why. Click the X on the banner to dismiss it.
Adjust brightness and contrast
After generation you can refine the image without regenerating:
- Drag the Bright slider left or right to shift overall brightness.
- Drag the Contrast slider to increase or reduce contrast.
These controls apply instantly and do not require a new generation run.
Export the mosaic
- Click Export in the bottom control bar.
- Choose KMZ (Google Earth) or GeoTIFF (GIS) from the menu.
- Pick a save location. The file is named after the recording.
If it does not work
- "Side-scan mosaic needs SI channels" — the loaded recording has no Side Imaging data. Confirm the recording came from a Humminbird unit with Side Imaging and that both port and starboard channels appear in the viewer.
- "No side-scan pings available to mosaic" — the SI channels parsed as empty. Try reloading the recording.
- "Not enough GPS extent to build a mosaic. Make sure the recording has usable GPS data." — the recording has Side Imaging data but no usable GPS track. Check the Map tab; if no track appears, the file lacks GPS data.
- Error banner with another message — the text describes the specific failure. Note the message and contact support if it recurs.
