Export KML for Google Earth

Export tracks and contacts as KML.

Use this when

You want to open a recording's track in Google Earth, or hand a single file to a GIS analyst that contains the boat path, contacts, and annotations together.

KML is the only HumVision export that combines all three layers. GPX carries the track or waypoints only.

Before you start

Open the recording in the viewer. The KML export works whenever the recording has GPS data. Contacts and annotations are included automatically if any are present — you do not need to do anything extra to include them.

Export KML

  1. Click Export in the viewer toolbar.
  2. Choose Export GPS Track (KML).
  3. A save dialog opens pre-filled with gps-track.kml.
  4. Choose a folder and click Save. A confirmation message appears: "KML track exported".

What you should see

The KML file opens in Google Earth as a track named "HumVision Track". Contacts appear as individual placemarks with their label and classification. Annotations appear as additional placemarks.

Depth is stored as altitude in the track coordinates (negative metres below surface), so Google Earth can render the path in 3D terrain view.

If it does not work

  • Export button is greyed out — the recording has not finished loading, or it contains no ping data. Wait for the viewer to finish rendering.
  • "There is no GPS track to export" — the recording pings all have zero GPS coordinates. The unit had no GPS fix during the session. There is no track data to export.
  • Track appears but contacts are missing in Google Earth — no contacts were marked in the recording. Mark contacts in the viewer and export again.
  • File does not open in Google Earth — confirm the file ends in .kml. Some operating systems may save it with an extra extension. Rename if needed and retry.
